Practice Cough Etiquette

by Peggy M. Parks, AICI CIP, CPBS

allergy-18656_1920It seems like half the people I know feel a cold coming on, are battling a cold, or are just getting a cold. Cold and flu season is in full swing and if you don’t want to help it spread, it’s important to take action.

According to the news, some medical centers and hospitals are enforcing visitor restrictions in order to cut down on cases of the flu and upper respiratory issues. Anyone who is sick is discouraged from visiting a patient. It’s especially important to take care around young people, the elderly, babies, and anyone with a compromised immune system.

Health professionals are also calling on people to practice cough etiquette. Always cover your mouth when coughing, and avoid spreading germs by touching surfaces used by others. Carry some tissues and Purell with you and use them frequently. If you’re really unwell, stay at home. If that’s not an option, minimize your exposure to others by keeping your distance, tidying up after yourself, and avoiding areas filled with people, such as the local gym or a city bus.

Keep in mind how annoyed you would be to catch someone else’s illness.
