The Gym Etiquette You Need To Know

by Peggy M. Parks, AICI CIP, CPBS

running-498257_1920I know a lot of you have been focused on getting fit and exercising more in the New Year. Now that I’m spending more time in the gym, I wanted to remind everyone of these gym etiquette practices. You can be civil and still get your sweat on!

-Don’t come late to class. It can be distracting for the instructor and fellow gym-goers if you sneak into a class 10 minutes after it’s started. Make an effort to get there a few minutes before the class starts, or rebook for another time.

-Wipe machines and equipment down. I’ve never been to a gym that didn’t have cleaning spray and towels to use on the machines after use. Use them! Nobody wants to share your sweat!

-Keep your music down. If you want to listen to your own tunes, fine. But keep the volume at a level where it won’t distract other gym members.

-Don’t leave the locker room a mess. Throw towels in the designated bins, clean up any paper towels or grooming products you’ve used, leave the shower in a tidy condition, and be considerate of how much space you and your gear are taking up.

-Don’t talk during yoga. This is not a romantic comedy. You are not Kate Hudson.

-Watch your space. Whether you’re using free weights or taking an aerobics class, be aware of those around you and avoid invading their space. At best, it’s annoying. At worst, it could result in an injury.

-Enter the class room only after the last class has left. Wait for everyone to exit before you plop your yoga mat at the front of the room.

It’s all very simple. Now go out there and get your sweat on!
