With Thanksgiving coming up this Thursday, I wanted to share something a friend of mine told me about her holiday tradition. Because she and her husband don’t have much family and live far away from their hometowns, they typically opt to host various friends and other “Thanksgiving orphans” on the day.
Just before the meal is served, my friend has each guest share what he or she has been thankful for in the past year. It’s a time for reflection and gratitude, and a wonderful reminder that Thanksgiving isn’t about stuffing our mouths with green bean casserole and pecan pie, watching football all day, or getting up before dawn for the Black Friday sales. It’s about celebrating loved ones and taking a moment to focus on the positive things in our lives.
With the election turmoil finally over, I for one am looking forward to spending the holiday with the people I love and reminding myself just how lucky I am. Nobody’s life is perfect, and we all have countless stresses weighing on our minds, but it’s important to take stock now and then and be thankful for what we do have.
Have a wonderful holiday, everyone!
