Awhile ago I wrote about people who turn up to the gym and grocery store looking like they just rolled out of bed. Apparently I’m not the only one irritated with this sloppy dress—a Tesco grocery store in Wales has become the first supermarket to issue a dress code by posting notices that shoppers could no longer wear their pajamas inside!
The store claims that they were forced to demand the no-nightwear rule in response to mothers arriving in their sleepwear after dropping their kids off at school. Some even did their shopping in slippers! Of course, some customers are outraged—one pajama-clad woman was escorted out of the store by a security guard—and call the rule “snobbish,” but others praise the store’s decision to demand a modicum of decorum in their building.
I personally think the store was right to issue a dress code—it’s hardly strict to ask customers to wear shoes and change out of their PJs! The least someone can do is slip on some comfy yoga pants and a clean t-shirt. If I ran into someone I knew or did business with in the frozen foods aisle and they were wearing slouchy flannel pajamas or a bathrobe, I’d seriously question their judgment. You needn’t be dressed to the nines, but show some respect for yourself!
