Don’t Say This To Your Guests

by Peggy M. Parks, AICI CIP, CPBS

MH900448734Are you planning on hosting a social event soon? Whether it’s a dinner party, cocktail party, or a backyard barbecue, this tip will help make sure your guests feel comfortable.

If you happen to notice that a guest is close to finishing their glass of wine, cocktail, or beer, don’t ask them if they’d like “another” or “more.” Instead, ask if they would like “some” wine/beer/whatever. Asking if they want more implies that they’ve been indulging too much. Whether you intend it to or not, it could be seen as a pointed remark, making your guests feel uneasy about helping themselves to another glass. How fun is that?

The same applies to food. People might be hesitant to enjoy seconds if you make a big deal about them having “more.” Nobody wants to feel like they’re being watched like a hawk or judged for every bite they eat. Simply encourage your guests to “help themselves,” and allow yourself to do the same. If you pick at your food, your guests are unlikely to feel comfortable about filling up their plate.

A good host makes guests feel at home. Encourage indulgence, not restraint or guilt. Otherwise, people will soon start wishing they’d stayed at home.
