A Word About New Year’s Eve

by Peggy M. Parks, AICI CIP, CPBS

fireworks-957494_1280This week is, of course, New Year’s Eve. I know many of you will have exciting parties and events to attend. The champagne will be flowing, and you’ll no doubt be in good spirits as you ring in 2016.

I did want to take a moment to remind everyone to be safe this holiday season. If you are celebrating away from home, appoint a designated driver, or take a cab or Uber. If you are hosting a party, make sure guests are okay to drive. Have the numbers for cab companies handy, or offer to let those who seem worse for wear stay over.

It’s not just about protecting yourself from harm. It’s also a sign of courtesy, respect, and civility to the world around you. When you drink and drive, or drive and text, you put others’ lives at risk. Would you ever forgive yourself if you caused an accident that caused someone else harm? It’s simply not worth it.

You can always celebrate at home or book a hotel room for the evening. New Year’s Eve is about celebrating the year that’s passed and looking forward to the exciting possibilities ahead. Don’t let a stupid mistake ruin that.
