New Study Shows Too Much Makeup at Work Can Hurt Your Career

by Peggy M. Parks, AICI CIP, CPBS

Ladies, do you tend to pile on the makeup before you head to work every day? According to a new survey, you’re not alone—but you might be hurting your career in the process.

A new St. Ives study found that one in five men wish that their ladies would wear less makeup, and one in 10 prefer the bare-faced look, the Daily Mail reports.

The study, which surveyed 2,000 adults, also reportedly found that 12 percent of women admit to piling on too much makeup. More than four out of 10 gals polled ‘fessed up to almost always applying cosmetics before going out, while roughly 15 percent said that there’s no way they’d leave the house without makeup.

About two-thirds of women claimed they wore makeup to work most days, though one in 20 had been told off by their boss for overdoing it. They also got less respect from their male work colleagues.

When asked to name their top 10 makeup pet peeves, here’s what the surveyed men reportedly said:

1. Lipstick on teeth
2. Too much blush
3. Thick foundation
4. Panda eyes
5. Clumpy mascara
6. Bright lipstick
7. Tell-tale foundation marks at the jawline
8. Bright blue eyeshadow
9. Penciled-in brows
10. Amy Winehouse-style eyeliner flicks

Now, there’s nothing wrong with wearing makeup—it’s always best to look well-groomed and presentable—but don’t go overboard. Avoid anything too trendy and don’t spackle your makeup on. Keep it clean, natural and soft—like Sandra Bullock in “The Proposal.” People will take you less seriously if you look like you’re headed to a nightclub!
