Now that summer is just around the corner and the temperature is rising, I’m chomping at the bit to go out and buy some new summery outfits. I’m sure you are too. But don’t let the excitement of a new pile of sundresses and shorts make you forget about maintaining a professional image at the office.
With many offices tending to favor a “business casual” dress code, it can be tempting to see what you can get away with: bare legs, flip-flops, a skirt that reveals a lot of leg… But what sort of message does that send to your supervisors and the clients who come into the office? If you are dressed too casually or even provocatively, it definitely hinders your ability to be taken seriously.
Also, I’ve noticed a lot of grooming no-nos during the summer. Don’t wear open-toed shoes if your feet are begging for a pedicure. If you’re going to skip the stockings, make sure your legs are nicely moisturized and free from bruises or stubble. And if you’ve spent too much time in the sun and have a lobster-red sunburn and peeling skin to show for it, do everyone a favor and cover it up.
It is, however, definitely possible to have fun with your work wardrobe. Why not take a cue from Olivia Pope on “Scandal” and rock a white sheath? The color is perfect for summer. Or, opt for statement accessories that add a pop of color to your look. And always keep a blazer or cardigan on hand for when you need to look more polished.
