This week brings us back to the first rule of civility, “I will show respect for all people and cultures.”
This brings to mind a topic that has been in the news this week: Indiana’s religious freedom law. On March 26, Governor Mike Pence signed the bill, which would allow businesses to deny services to LGBT customers and others based on their religious beliefs. For instance, a restaurant or hotel owned by people with conservative Christian beliefs could decline to serve a gay couple because they objected to their lifestyle.
Obviously, this is the opposite of showing respect. Even if we do not agree with someone’s beliefs or way of life, they should be treated like any other. Not surprisingly, folks all over the country responded with dismay over the new law. Now, Gov. Pence says he has asked lawmakers to provide clarification that proves the law will not allow businesses to discriminate or deny services. Providing liberty for one group shouldn’t deny liberty for others.
Let’s encourage our own lawmakers to support a more tolerant—and civil—society.
