This seems to be the time of year when everyone is coming down with a nasty cold. Unfortunately, not everyone has the sense to take care of themselves and stay at home rather than expose others to their illness.
A friend of mine mentioned that the woman she sits next to at work has been coming in all week with a brutal cold. All she does is complain about her illness, but when others suggest that she go home and rest, she shrugs them off. Sure enough, now at least two other co-workers have come down with the same bug, and my friend is constantly taking vitamins and Emergen-C to ensure that she doesn’t get sick too. When the woman with the cold hands her a file, my friend is desperate to sanitize herself with Purell.
I know not everyone has the luxury of calling in sick, particularly if you are paid on an hourly or shift basis, but most full-time employees have the option to do so. People get sick, and that’s why companies have sick days! Trust me, your employer and co-workers would much rather pick up the slack for you for one or two days than get sick themselves and lose a good chunk of the workforce.
You owe it to yourself to rest up and recuperate when you’re ill. Don’t be a hero by showing up and exposing others to your cold. It won’t be appreciated!
