Christmas is just over a week away and the holiday cards have been piling up.
I just have one minor quibble: the lack of impersonal notes! So many of the cards I’ve received simply have the person or company’s name typed or stamped inside, with no signature or personal greeting to accompany it. I realize that this may not be realistic for many businesses, but I expect some sort of note—even if it’s just “Happy holidays, Peggy!”—or a handwritten signature from people I know personally. Otherwise, I feel like I’m just some entry on a mass mailing list.
Years ago I used to be put off by those long Christmas letters in which people I hadn’t seen in years bragged about how well their kids were doing and described their many vacations in painstaking detail. It seemed over the top, but in hindsight I’d almost prefer one of those to a routine card that says nothing at all. I don’t need a letter, but a quick note would be nice!
We’re all pressed for time when we’re filling out our Christmas cards, but even just jotting down “Best wishes for a great holiday,” “Thinking of you and your family,” “Let’s catch up soon,” or “Here’s to a terrific 2013” can make the card feel so much more friendly and sincere.
