The past week and a half has been a trying time for us all. As a French-American woman, my heart aches for Paris. As a citizen of the world, my heart also aches for Syrian refugees who encounter violence and starvation on a daily basis.
I don’t expect everyone to agree on this matter, but I’ve been surprised at the amount of vitriol being shared on social media. Several people I know have confided that they’ve deleted Facebook friends for posting comments they find offensive and racist. Just this week a group of armed citizens protested outside a mosque in Texas. These people of course have a right to their opinions, but this show of force seems to be hurting more than helping.
My hope for this holiday season is that we can come together in peace, and not fear. This fighting and reactionary squabbling is tearing us apart, and no doubt giving the terrorists exactly what they want. Let us not forget what makes us civilized humans.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday.
